One day<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0about 15 years ago<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0my Dad and I sat down in front of the TV and began to watch\u00a0<\/span>Batman (Micheal Keaton version)<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and in my opinion<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0still the best Bat. \u00a0My Dad looked at me and said<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0“I remember this when it was released in the cinema, you begged me to take you”. \u00a0In the end he didn’t take me, because I was two young apparently. \u00a0The year of this bat movie was 1989 and I was between six and seven<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>U<\/span>pon hearing this story I was disappointed my Dad\u00a0<\/span>hadn\u2019t taken\u00a0<\/span>me to this cultural milestone \u00a0(as movies often were back then) but two years later it was recorded\u00a0<\/span>from<\/span>\u00a0the TV and placed in the VHS video cabinet in the lounge. \u00a0The words “BATMAN MOVIE !!!” scrawled in “Dad Caps” along with what seemed like hundreds of others. \u00a0I can still vividly remember\u00a0<\/span>\u2018<\/span>Jagged Edge<\/span>\u2019<\/span>, \u2018HEAT<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0\u2018<\/span>Digby The Biggest Dog In The World<\/span><\/a>\u2019<\/span>, chunky VHS black bricks laid atop one another, masterpiece and mediocre \u00a0end to end.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The 1980s still remains the wonder years for me<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0not because I was involved in stock market booms, celebrity cocaine use explosion or big hair and shoulder pads. \u00a0But because faint memories haunt my brain every time I hear a song or watch a movie from that period. \u00a0The\u00a0<\/span>artist<\/span>\u00a0that fills me with the most wonder is Cyndi Lauper. \u00a0A symbol of the\u00a0<\/span>E<\/span>ighties Americana along with pre-surgery Micheal Jackson<\/span>\u00a0*<\/span>and Prince*. \u00a0Her American\/New York speaking voice furnished with an almost cartoon<\/span>–<\/span>like tone is unmistakable even now, and when she sings you would be a fool not to instantly peg\u00a0<\/span>whose\u00a0<\/span>lungs the breath is gushing from<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For me<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0Lauper was part of the\u00a0<\/span>\u2018<\/span>80s that I definitely recognise but the origin of that recognition is a mystery to me. \u00a0<\/span>\u2018<\/span>Girls Just Wanna Have Fun<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0is the most famous Cindy Lauper song and I must admit<\/span>;\u00a0<\/span>I love it. \u00a0I have always loved it. \u00a0It brings a smile to my face on the darkest of days. \u00a0But I can’t remember where I heard it first. \u00a0I just know it was always there. \u00a0I was born on\u00a0<\/span>th<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a027th June 1982,\u00a0<\/span>\u2018<\/span>GJWHF<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0came out in<\/span>\u00a0\u2018<\/span>83 and no doubt was a radio station favo<\/span>u<\/span>rite for some time, as it is today. I like to imagine my Mum in the house, the radio playing the Lauper classic and me happily sitting quietly without a care in the world. \u00a0I must have been happy and I’m sure psychologists would scream “Association Memory” or something similar. Thirty years on the song still more than holds\u00a0<\/span>its<\/span>\u00a0own<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0the spirit of this track lives in the minds of each new generation seeking adventure, parties<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0drinking and drugs. \u00a0Hoards of youths experiencing new things in their respective social groups, away from prying eyes of parents, a momentary lapse in the symbiotic relationship with authority. \u00a0That same authority effortlessly swept away with the opening unforgettable disco guitar chord pattern responsible\u00a0<\/span>for\u00a0<\/span>throwing a\u00a0<\/span>thousand<\/span>\u00a0arms in the air on a thousand Saturday nights. \u00a0I think it’s safe to say, we will all<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>always want to have fun.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
